Badagry Kingdom has been thrown into deep mourning following the passing of its revered paramount ruler, His Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I (OFR, LLD, DLitt, JP), the Akran of Badagry.

The respected monarch, who reigned for over 48 years, passed on Monday at the age of 89 after a brief illness, marking the end of one of the longest and most influential traditional reigns in the history of the ancient coastal town.

Ascending the throne of his forefathers on 23 April 1977, Oba Menu-Toyi I served as a stabilising force in Badagry Kingdom and rose to become Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, a position that underscored his stature among traditional rulers in the state.

Throughout his reign, the late Akran was widely regarded as a custodian of Badagry’s heritage, a unifying royal father, and a leading advocate for the preservation of the town’s history, customs, and cultural identity. His influence extended beyond palace walls, earning him respect across Lagos State and Nigeria as a monarch of intellect, dignity, and cultural depth.

Reacting to his passing, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the monarch’s death as a profound loss to Badagry, Lagos State, and the nation at large. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the governor praised Oba Menu-Toyi’s decades of selfless service, noting his commitment to unity, tradition, and development.

According to the governor, the late Akran “served as the custodian of Badagry’s traditions, customs, and cultural heritage for nearly 49 years” and was known for promoting the town’s historical sites and cultural festivals both nationally and internationally, thereby fostering tourism and cultural exchange.

Beyond cultural leadership, Oba Menu-Toyi was also acknowledged for using his royal position to attract growth and development to Badagry, while maintaining peace among diverse interests within the kingdom.

As Badagry bows its head in grief, tributes continue to pour in for a monarch whose reign shaped generations and whose legacy remains deeply etched in the town’s identity. The late #Akran is remembered not only as a traditional ruler, but as a symbol of continuity, wisdom, and royal authority in one of Lagos State’s most historically significant communities.

Funeral arrangements and official burial rites are expected to be announced by the royal family and relevant traditional authorities in due course.
