In #Ogu land, names are not chosen at random. Our forefathers named children based on circumstances surrounding birth, such as timing, family history, spiritual beliefs, special events, or unusual experiences.

Every name carries history, identity, and meaning.

Broadly, Ogu names can be grouped into:

  • Natural or Heaven-sent names
  • Celebration or season-based names
Names linked to repeated births, stillbirths, or spiritual experiences (commonly called “Jiku” names)

NATURAL (HEAVEN-SENT) NAMES IN OGU - OVIYIN HENTHOWA
(Known in Yoruba as “Orúkọ Amútọ̀runwá”)

These are names believed to be brought by the child from heaven, especially in cases such as multiple births.

TWIN NAMES IN OGU LAND
Male Twins

When both twins are male, they are collectively called AHOHOVI.

  • First-born twin: ZINSU or TITO
  • Second-born twin: SAGBO or SAO

Female Twins

When both twins are female:
  • First-born twin: TETE
  • Second-born twin: MAYIN
(Equivalent to Taiwo and Kehinde in Yoruba culture)

CHILDREN BORN AFTER TWINS

A child born immediately after twins:

  • Male: THOSU
  • Female: THOSI
(Equivalent to “Idowu”)

A child born after THOSU or THOSI:

  • Male: THOSA
  • Female: THOWHE

These names preserve birth order, family structure, and cultural continuity within Ogu society.

CULTURAL NOTE

In Ogu tradition, names are historical records. They tell stories of family lineage, divine encounters, and communal memory. Preserving these names helps protect our identity and cultural heritage.
