Oba Cadius Dosa Akran, also known as #Aholu Jiva Jegba II, was one of Badagry’s most influential 20th-century figures, combining traditional authority with active political leadership during Nigeria’s formative years.

Born in 1899 into the #Kopon family of the #Jegba quarters, Akran was educated at St Gregory’s College, Obalende, and King’s College, before joining the Postal and Telegraph Department in 1926.

He ascended the throne as #Akran of #Badagry in 1950, following his appointment as head of the Jegba quarter two years earlier. Alongside his royal duties, he represented Badagry in the regional Parliament in 1951 and went on to serve as Regional Minister of Local Government and Economic Planning in 1952. Between 1962 and 1966, he held office as Provincial Minister of Finance.

Oba Akran played a central role in Badagry’s modern development. He founded Badagry Grammar School in 1955, the town’s first secondary school, and helped facilitate the introduction of electricity, improved road networks, and postal and telegraph services. He also served as chairman of the Badagry City Council and contributed to the Egun-Awori Native Authority.

In 1967, his public career was overshadowed by a corruption conviction involving Nigersols Construction Company Ltd, for which he received a 14-year prison sentence without hard labour. He denied wrongdoing, stating in court that he had acted on instructions from the late Premier, Chief Samuel Akintola.

Oba Akran’s legacy in Badagry remains complex and debated—defined by significant developmental achievements, deep political involvement, and a controversial end to an otherwise prominent public life.
