Worry over the prolonged neglect of the historic Point of No Return monument in Gberefu, Badagry, has resurfaced, with a local youth leader appealing to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to take urgent steps to restore the site.

In an open letter to the governor, Abiodun Semasa Emmanuel, President of Hungon #Igborosun Youth, described the current state of the monument as “a painful reminder of lost opportunities” and emphasised its potential to drive tourism, generate revenue, and preserve Badagry’s cultural legacy.

Semasa noted that despite its significance as a historic site linked to the transatlantic slave trade, the Point of No Return has been left unattended for years, limiting its potential to attract visitors and stimulate local economic activity. He argued that with proper investment and management, the monument could become a major tourist attraction, benefiting local entrepreneurs, hotels, transport operators, artisans, and food vendors, while also creating jobs for residents.

The letter further highlighted that the revival of such a landmark aligns with Lagos State’s broader objectives in economic diversification, urban development, and community empowerment. Semasa suggested that the government could explore options such as public-private partnerships, concessions, or direct state-led intervention to bring the monument back to life.

Raising questions about accountability, the youth leader claimed to have seen evidence indicating that the governor had previously inspected the site and that funds may have been earmarked for its renovation. He urged the government to clarify the status of these allocations and identify contractors or officials responsible if the funds were indeed released. “If resources were made available but the monument still lies abandoned, the public deserves to know the reasons behind the delay,” the letter stated, emphasizing the need for transparency.

For cases where no funding had been provided previously, the appeal requested that the monument’s restoration be prioritized in upcoming budget considerations, noting that repeated instances of unfinished projects continue to impede development in the community.

Semasa concluded the letter with optimism in Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, expressing confidence that the Point of No Return could be transformed into a symbol of pride, cultural heritage, and sustainable economic growth for Badagry and Lagos State.
