Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged intending Christian pilgrims from the state to conduct themselves as true ambassadors of Jesus Christ and Lagos State as they prepare for the 2026 pilgrimage to Israel and Jordan.

The governor gave the charge during a Service of Dedication organised by the Lagos State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board at the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja. He was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mr Ibrahim #Layode, a Badagry indigene.

Governor Sanwo-Olu encouraged the pilgrims to take advantage of the spiritual journey to pray for peace, unity and stability in Lagos State and Nigeria at large. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the pilgrims’ spiritual growth, safety and general wellbeing throughout the exercise.

Speaking on the theme of the service, “Set Apart for a Holy Journey,” the governor noted that pilgrimage remains a sacred opportunity for believers to draw closer to God, strengthen their faith and renew their commitment to Christian values. He further advised pilgrims to exercise patience, tolerance and mutual understanding throughout the journey.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Christian Matters, Rev. Bukola Adeleke, offered prayers for a successful and accident-free pilgrimage. She urged participants to remain focused, cooperate with one another and work as a unified team.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr Adewunmi Ogunsanya, reminded the pilgrims of the importance of discipline and obedience, stressing that they must comply fully with the laws of Israel and Jordan, as well as adhere strictly to instructions from tour guides and officials.

Ogunsanya cautioned that any pilgrim who absconds or violates regulations would face legal consequences, urging participants to remain prayerful in order to experience a genuine spiritual encounter and deepen their relationship with God.

In his remarks, the Secretary of the Lagos State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Dr Omoniyi Okudero, advised pilgrims to prioritise the spiritual essence of the pilgrimage over social activities. While commending Governor Sanwo-Olu for his continuous support, he assured pilgrims of proper coordination, guidance and welfare arrangements.

Earlier, delivering a sermon at the service, the Deputy Director of Evangelism and Discipleship, Methodist Church of Nigeria, Very Rev. Ayo Adepoju, encouraged pilgrims to embark on the journey with faith and expectation, noting that pilgrimage has the power to transform lives spiritually.

The first batch of Lagos Christian pilgrims is scheduled to depart for Israel and Jordan on January 31, marking the official commencement of the 2026 pilgrimage exercise.
