The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Seme Command, has intensified its efforts against rice smuggling, recently raiding a key distribution point at the Badagry market and confiscating over 200 bags of illicit rice.

The operation is part of a broader campaign to eliminate illegal rice sales at the notorious Badagry roundabout, a hotspot for smugglers. The command has pledged to maintain regular enforcement until the area is completely cleared.

The #Seme Command also highlighted its strong revenue performance, collecting around N2 billion in the first three weeks of 2026. This follows a total revenue of N15.6 billion in 2025, including N3.6 billion generated in December alone.

Speaking during a courtesy visit from the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) on 21 January, Comptroller Wale Adenuga, the Controller of Seme border, reaffirmed his commitment to surpassing last year’s achievements. He noted that officers are actively targeting smugglers along their routes in the creeks and at market distribution points.

Adenuga said, “We recently raided the Badagry roundabout, which had become a hub for smuggled rice sales. Despite repeated warnings, some individuals continued their activities. We even appealed to the late Oba of Badagry to intervene. Today, the area has been cleared, and our officers remain vigilant to prevent further violations.”

With continued support from the Comptroller-General, Wale Adeniyi, and his management team, Seme Command aims to sustain both enforcement and revenue collection throughout 2026.
