The #Agbara stretch of the Lagos–Badagry Expressway has once again come under public scrutiny, with commuters describing it as one of the most distressing travel corridors in Lagos due to prolonged road construction and worsening traffic conditions.

Drawing attention to the situation, Just Ozed said the hardship faced daily by residents and road users along the Agbara axis had reached an alarming level. According to him, many commuters, after enduring long and exhausting workdays, are forced to trek over a kilometre just to access public transport or remain trapped in traffic for hours.

“While disruptions are expected during construction, the pace of work here is simply not encouraging compared to the suffering commuters face daily,” he noted, adding that the burden placed on residents appears not to be adequately reflected in the execution timeline of the project.

Supporting this view, Kay Soyemi said the scale of the upgrade could not justify the prolonged hardship, stressing that the situation transcends political affiliations.

“Sadly, no reasonable person can argue against this observation. The repair on this route is a massive upgrade, but it feels like it is taking forever. Government needs to step up on this corridor,” he said.

Other commuters shared firsthand experiences of exhaustion, frustration and physical strain. Chioma Jennifer Oyi described the daily reality for residents of Agbara, Okeafo and surrounding communities as overwhelming.

“The level of traffic is annoying. People are trekking back and forth. I was stuck in traffic, sweating heavily. My tired is tired,” she said.

In a detailed account, Tony Dansu acknowledged that the reconstruction had been long awaited but criticised the slow execution and lack of communication.

“Journeys that should take less than five minutes now stretch into hours. People trek long distances, face threats from reckless one-way drivers and okada riders, endure outrageous transport fares and constant security risks,” he said, adding that commuters had not been informed of project timelines, diversions or alternative routes.

The concern was further amplified by Prince Samuel Mawutin Ofade, who described the Agbara axis as a nightmare and warned that the situation affects more than local communities.

“This is not just a local road. It is an international route linking Nigeria to Benin, Togo, Ghana and beyond. How many more years will it take to complete this road?” he asked, calling for a permanent solution rather than temporary fixes.

Adding a human touch to the crisis, Mammie Ire Mide recounted trekking from Ijanikin to Agbara after hours in gridlock.

“If you survive Ijanikin to Agbara traffic, you can survive anything in Nigeria. I had to remove my slippers and trek like the Israelites crossing the Red Sea,” she said.

As pressure mounts, commuters and residents are urging authorities to accelerate construction work, improve traffic management, communicate transparently with the public and prioritise safety along the Agbara corridor, which remains one of the most critical yet troubled sections of the #LagosBadagryExpressway.
