At just 13 years old, Awwal Abass is already making waves in Nigeria’s tourism and heritage sector. As the curator of the Seriki Williams Abass Slave Relics Museum in Badagry, Lagos State, he has become one of the youngest voices dedicated to preserving the history of the transatlantic slave trade.

Awwal’s passion and dedication were recently recognised when he received the Rising Tourism Icon of the Year 2025 award from the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN), South West Region.

The award, presented by a delegation led by the association’s National Vice President, Hon. Samson Nunayon Prince Apata, celebrated his exceptional knowledge and commitment to heritage preservation.

Nominated during the South West International Tourism Expo 2025, Awwal stood out among numerous contenders, proving that age is no barrier to excellence.
