The Lagos State Government has installed solar power systems in key tourism facilities in Badagry as part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, enhance visitor experience and strengthen tourism development in the historic coastal town.

The intervention, implemented through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, is aimed at reducing dependence on the national grid and addressing persistent power challenges that have affected major tourist attractions in the area.

Speaking during an inspection of the completed projects on Thursday, 24 January 2026, the Director of the Monuments Management Department, Mr Ibrahim Ladejobi, who represented the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, said the initiative was designed to create seamless and memorable experiences for visitors.

According to the commissioner, the solar installations are expected to improve service delivery, encourage increased tourist patronage and position Badagry as a more attractive and reliable tourism destination.

Facilities that benefited from the solar power systems include the Badagry Heritage Museum, the #Vlekete Slave Market and the Tourist Information Centre, all of which play a central role in preserving the town’s cultural history and supporting tourism activities.

Mrs Benson-Awoyinka explained that the decision to adopt alternative energy solutions followed repeated complaints from tourists and stakeholders over erratic electricity supply at the sites.

“To bridge the gap and address recurring power challenges affecting these facilities, the Ministry opted for a sustainable energy solution that guarantees uninterrupted services for visitors,” she said.

She added that the project was executed under the supervision of the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to ensure quality standards, durability and long-term sustainability.

The development is expected to further enhance Badagry’s profile as a heritage tourism hub while supporting the state’s broader agenda of promoting renewable energy and sustainable tourism infrastructure.
