#Gbenopo Primary School in Ajara-Topa, Badagry, has benefited from a Lagos State Government School Health Programme aimed at promoting preventive healthcare, improving learning outcomes and strengthening early childhood development.

The initiative was implemented by Lagos State Health District V as part of ongoing efforts by the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration to integrate health education into public primary schools across the state.

The programme, which forms part of the wider School Health Programme rolled out across selected public schools, focused on educating pupils at Gbenopo Primary School on personal hygiene, cleanliness, emotional wellbeing and personal safety through age-appropriate and engaging activities.

Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Health District V, Dr Oladapo Asiyanbi, the Director of Medical Services and Disease Control, Dr Ahmad Amina Bello, said the initiative was designed to instil healthy habits in children at an early age.

According to her, introducing basic health education within the school environment helps prevent common childhood illnesses, supports emotional development and enhances pupils’ ability to learn effectively.

She explained that bringing healthcare education directly into primary schools aligns with the Lagos State Government’s THEMES Plus Agenda, particularly its focus on health, education and social inclusion, with early childhood care recognised as a critical foundation for lifelong wellbeing.

Dr Ahmad noted that the intervention at Gbenopo Primary School reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that children in communities such as Badagry are not left behind in access to essential health education and preventive care.

The programme was well received by pupils and teachers, who participated actively in the interactive sessions designed to promote healthy living within and beyond the school environment.

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding similar school-based health initiatives across the state as part of its broader strategy to build a healthier, more productive and well-educated population.

The School Health Programme, which commenced on Tuesday and was implemented over several days, was also carried out in other selected public primary schools across Lagos State Health District V, including Christ the King Primary School, Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area; 5th Avenue Nursery and Primary School, Festac Town, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government; and St. Michael Nursery and Primary School, Ojo Local Government Area, as the state government continues to expand preventive healthcare and early childhood development interventions across public schools.
