The Federal Government has reaffirmed that the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway will be equipped with modern security and safety infrastructure, including Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance, street lighting and reinforced concrete pavement, as part of measures to protect road users and host communities—particularly at the Badagry terminal of the project.

The 1,068-kilometre highway, which runs from Illela in Sokoto State at the Nigeria–Niger Republic border to Badagry in Lagos State, is designed to serve as a major national and regional transport corridor linking agricultural, commercial and border communities directly to the South-West coast.

Federal officials explained that the integration of CCTV cameras along the route will enable real-time monitoring of traffic movement and security incidents, while continuous street lighting will improve night-time visibility and reduce the risk of accidents and criminal activity. The use of reinforced concrete pavement is also expected to enhance durability and ensure long-term performance under heavy traffic conditions.

According to the Federal Government, these features reflect a deliberate shift towards building safer, smarter and more resilient highways that support economic growth while prioritising public safety.

For Badagry, the assurances are particularly significant. As the southern terminal of the Superhighway, the town is expected to experience increased traffic flow, trade activities and logistics operations once the road is completed. Authorities say the safety features are intended to ensure that this growth does not come at the expense of security or community wellbeing.

Project officials noted that the highway’s design aligns with international best practices, combining modern engineering with technology-driven security solutions to protect both commuters and residents along the corridor.

They also emphasised that the road will strengthen Badagry’s role as a strategic gateway connecting the North-West, North-Central and South-West regions of Nigeria, while supporting cross-border trade and national integration.

Construction work is currently progressing across multiple sections of the Superhighway, with the Federal Government assuring that quality control, security deployment and community engagement remain central to the project’s execution.

Residents of Badagry have been urged to continue cooperating with contractors and security agencies, as the government positions the Superhighway not only as a transport route, but as a long-term economic and security asset for the town and the country at large.
