The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested the driver of an articulated truck following a serious head-on collision with a commercial bus along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway.

The accident occurred on Tuesday at the Mosafejo–Aradagun axis, a section of the highway known for heavy traffic and frequent violations. The crash involved an articulated truck and a Mazda commercial bus with registration number FST 946 YK.

According to traffic officials at the scene, the incident was caused when the truck driver attempted to make an illegal U-turn at an unauthorised point, directly obstructing the path of the oncoming commercial bus. The manoeuvre resulted in a violent collision that left several passengers injured.

Following the impact, three male passengers inside the commercial bus sustained critical injuries. Operatives of LASTMA, in collaboration with officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), promptly arrived at the scene and coordinated rescue efforts.

The injured victims were carefully evacuated from the wreckage and rushed to a nearby General Hospital by FRSC officials for urgent medical attention.
To prevent a secondary accident and restore traffic flow, LASTMA officers cleared the damaged vehicles from the roadway while managing vehicular movement in the area. Officers from the Badagry Divisional Police Command also provided security support throughout the operation.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, expressed sympathy to the victims and their families, describing the crash as unfortunate and avoidable.

“Our thoughts are with the victims of this unfortunate accident, and we wish them a speedy and full recovery,” Giwa said.

He issued a stern warning to truck drivers and operators of heavy-duty vehicles, cautioning them against reckless driving and disregard for traffic regulations. According to him, practices such as illegal U-turns pose serious risks to road users and will not be tolerated.

“Drivers must strictly comply with traffic laws as stipulated under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law. Reckless actions that endanger lives will attract the full weight of the law,” he added.

Hon. Giwa reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to road safety, noting that enforcement, traffic monitoring, and public awareness campaigns would continue to be strengthened to safeguard lives and property on major highways, including the Lagos–Badagry corridor.

Residents and commuters along the expressway have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement and improved traffic control, especially in accident-prone areas, to reduce the frequency of such incidents
