#Tongeji Island, an oil-rich and scenic community in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, has been cleared for commercial oil drilling, following approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The announcement was made by Governor Dapo Abiodun during a visit by the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, and his senior officers.

Tongeji Island, renowned for its breathtaking waterfront, abundant palm and coconut trees, white sand beaches, and recently discovered crude oil deposits, has historically faced infrastructural neglect. Residents have lacked access roads, electricity, and basic amenities, and children often travel to neighbouring Port Novo in Benin Republic for schooling.

The Paramount Ruler of Tongeji Island, Oba Bi Olorunkosi, has consistently urged the federal and state governments to invest in the island’s infrastructure to make it attractive to tourists and investors. “We need linking roads and infrastructure,” the monarch said, highlighting that the island’s oil reserves have attracted interest from Benin Republic, but the community remains committed to Nigeria.

Governor Abiodun also confirmed the immediate take-off of commercial oil operations at Eba in Ogun Waterside, noting that these projects will promote economic inclusion and empowerment for coastal communities. He highlighted that the Olokola Deep Seaport, now renamed the Blue Marine Economic Zone, will complement the development, helping to decongest Lagos ports and create new logistics corridors.

The governor praised the Nigerian Navy’s presence on Tongeji Island, stating that the establishment of a Forward Operations Base (FOB) would deter smuggling, pipeline vandalism, and other criminal activities, while also creating a framework for economic growth and infrastructure development. Rear Admiral Mustapha noted the area’s strategic importance for national security, and that the naval outpost would be upgraded due to the island’s significant oil potential.

Residents of Tongeji Island expressed cautious optimism. With a population of around 500 people, the island’s economy relies primarily on fishing, farming, and livestock, but the lack of infrastructure has limited opportunities. The naval presence and upcoming oil operations are expected to bring new investment, create jobs, and improve living conditions.

This development marks a potential turning point for Tongeji Island, which has long been considered a hidden gem in Ogun State, combining tourism potential, natural beauty, and now, energy resources. The integration of security, infrastructure, and commercial oil activities could pave the way for a new era of growth for the community.
